I am somewhat surprised when I hear people in Mequon aren’t familiar with balayage. Women are pretty savvy, they always know what they want. Yet it seems that balayage highlights are the best kept secret in our salons. So what is it about balayage that celebrities all ask for it?
- Balayage is the art of hair painting. Highlights are hand painted on to the hair for a natural looking sun kissed effect. I bet you’ve heard of sun kissed hair before. You should know then that balayage creates that look better than any other technique. Hair painting also creates the popular ombre look.
- There are definite benefits to balayage: a less manufactured look, the regrowth is less obvious with a softer line of demarcation and lower maintenance.
- However, if you have dark hair and look for monochromatic roots (real blond) color via highlights, forget the balayage. The painted highlights follow the natural flow of your hair, not so close to each other and they are definitely not uniform. They also have different points of origin, some start right from the scalp, some from farther, it all depends on the desired effect. If you pick through your hair like chickens in the dirt, surprise, surprise, all the hair underneath will be dark. These strands are specifically left to create contrast and dimension. If that contrast bothers you, balayage may not be right for you.
- We don’t call balayage “partial”. Balayage is a customized service, it takes a lot of skill and we charge $105 to start; it all depends on hair volume and length. Ok, I’ll share a secret with you: face framing is crucial for the balayage look and we can do that for about $75 I usually paint 10 highlights around and slightly behind the hairline, following the movement of your hair for a sublime dimensional look.
