There are many changes that come with perimenopause and menopause including changes to your hair and skin.
In the years leading up to menopause, also known as perimenopause, are when women experience fluctuating levels of estrogen, testosterone, DHEA and androstenedione. Menopause, when your period comes to a complete stop for at least 12 months, is when estrogen levels are usually at the lowest.
The perimenopause cycle can lead to hair thinning and loss of collagen in the skin. As a person gets older and the production of estrogen decreases, hair can become thinner and lead to more breakage and skin becomes less plump and hydrated leading to wrinkles.
During Menopause, estrogen levels are extremely low and usually at their lowest, which leads to further changes in the hair and skin.
Estrogen has a big influence on hair growth, affecting the density of the hair and growth rate. Having very low levels of estrogen after menopause can lead to shedding and scalp hair loss. Some women can also experience an increase in facial hair growth and a decrease in the amount of body hair growth due to the flux in hormones.
Additionally, collagen decreases very rapidly during menopause, which results in thinner skin and a decrease in the skin’s elasticity. Also, due to the very low levels of estrogen, skin becomes more noticeably dry.
