While shampooing is designed to clean your scalp and remove excess oil from your hair, it’s not good to do all the time. Washing your hair every day has been proven to damage your hair. Over shampooing can leave your scalp too dry, removing important oils that lead to healthy, shiny hair. It also makes your hair feel coarse and becomes more difficult to style. But what if your hair looks greasy after only one day of not shampooing? Check out these tips to extend the time between your hair wash.
Ease Into It
It’s unlikely that the first time you go a few days without washing your hair, it won’t look greasy. Hair takes time to adjust to new hygiene habits. Start your transition to shampooing less by washing your hair every other day for a couple of weeks. Then, shampoo every three days for a few weeks and so on. Your hair will eventually adjust and will reap the benefits of having more natural oils. (yay to shiny hair!)
Dry Shampoo
Dry shampoo is a great substitute for washing hair in the shower. It’s quick, easy, and leaves your hair feeling fresh and styled. Dry shampoo is perfect for your “in-between” shampooing days to add some volume and keep your hair smelling fresh. Our favorites are R+Co’s Death Valley and Oribe’s Gold Lust.
Just Water
Once your hair has adjusted to your new shampooing routine, try just using water. This isn’t to say you should replace your shampoo with water. Use only water on days that you didn’t sweat a lot or get dirty. This technique is also great for when you want to wash off but don’t want to full-on shampoo your hair.
